PTFE or BioFlex for Pregnancy ?

This is a question asked via e-mail by one of our potential customers on the 2nd June 2008 :

"I would like to buy a present for a friend but I am very sorry I dont understand the difference between bioflex and ptfe. I have looked on ebay and some of the sellers list an item for pregnancy belly bars as bioflex ptfe in the same title. Not knowing what these are I went into google for information and came across your site. As I am buying a gift for someone else I would like to know I am buying the right thing. I am very confused now as everyone seems to be giving out different information. Did I read your information correctly that bioflex and ptfe are not the same material. If this is true can you please explain in very simple terms what is so different and which one you would recommend to be the best for a pregnant woman as they both seem to do the job but I would prefer to buy the better one. Thank you for your time. Regards Ann."

Our Answer :

Hi Ann

Thanks for your email. It raises a question that is often asked, much to our dismay!

If I explain the differences, then you will be able to make your own informed decision ... PTFE and BioFlex are completely different materials, and each have their own advantages. Beware of pseudo Bioflex ... generally produced in Asia, they do not have the excellent qualities which make natural BioFlex the best material for body piercing jewellery and their source cannot be verified. We know where ours come from ! PTFE and BioFlex are both suitable for body piercing, particularly for use in pregnancy. We are the ONLY manufacturer of BioFlex with our unique material.

There is a visual difference. PTFE has a milky appearance from the virgin material and come also in black, while natural BioFlex is clear and transparent (we also produce BioFlex in different colours).

PTFE and BioFlex are both flexible materials. PTFE is very flexible. BioFlex is somewhat firmer, making it easier to use. In this case, to manipulate a bar of PTFE in a piercing is not as easy as with BioFlex ... for a navel piercing, this can be important (and I assume it is for this that you seek an answer). Flexibility is also an issue with attaching the ball endings is much easier with the firmer BioFlex.

We can supply PTFE in any length. We produce BioFlex bars with a maximum length of 30mm ... more than enough to be accommodated in a navel piercing ... well, 95% of piercings really. We also produce BioFlex with a fixed ball ending at one end ... in fact, you may have seen that we produce navel jewellery with a jewelled end .... with PTFE, you would need to purchase a ball for each end.

For pregnancy, we always advise small diameter endings, as the aim is to not catch the jewellery when the belly is exposed. Balls diameters from 4 to 6mm maximum is recommended, jewelled or not.

Of the two, we would always recommend BioFlex as the most suitable material. However, the choice is always that of the customer.

I hope that helps. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate. We are so proud of our BioFlex, that we never tire of talking about it!!

Best Regards

Patrick

"These are absolutely amazing! I have always loved my madonna piercing, but I just wanted the gem to be visible, i never liked the metal sticking out when I smiled. Then I found this site, these are great, now all you can see is a sparkle. And they're so small, it could be a stick on gem on my face! They are so comfortable as well! I recommend these for anyone who wants the sparkle, but not the metal. They are perfect! Thanks for making them. I've attached photos that really show how they sparkle.

I couldn't help but browse your website for some jewellery, which reminded me to submit some photos of your Bioflex push-pin jewellery which I put into my upper cartilage. I know you don't remember me, but I promised you these some time ago to put into your customer comments section if you want.

They are, bar-none, the most comfortable piece of jewellery in my upper ear, and I will *never* go back to those icky, stainless-steel rings. They were relatively easy to install (with the help of my husband, because I'm such a klutz when it comes to putting the stuff in in the mirror).

Hi,

I just wanted to tell you that I'm really satisfied with my purchase. I bought a slave navel ring barbell from you with a swarowski crystal round and I've never been this happy with a piece of navel jewellery!! It was easy to cut of the barbell stem to the right lenght, I made it a bit too long at first, since I was worried that my piercing would get swollen after the change, but after a few days I cut it shorter, while it was still in my body, and rescrewed the ball. The body flex material feels great in the piercing and now my piercing has stopped itching. Before I changed to bioflex it itched, the white stuff stuck to the titanium shaft and irritated when I moved at mornings before washing it and it was hard to remove. Now the white stuff gets on the skin instead and doesn't irritate the piercing.

I went to a store that sells jewellery and hobby supplies and bought a pack of bolt rings in silver. Now I've taken all my old necklaces I never use anymore and made them into navel jewellery! It's great. From having a ordinary barbell with green stones, I now have ten different things to hang in my navel and it's so easy to add and remove, it's done in seconds! I had to open up the bolt rings a bit with a pair of pliers, but that took about 3 secounds and now it's really easy to change.

Thank you very much for this great idea and for your great costumer service when I asked you some questions before I bought jewellery from you! I'm so glad I found your website and jewellery.

I send a picture of my piercing and some of my jewellery, thought that you might like to see it. I know that I missed pictures on your website, to get an idea of how it would look in the navel. If you want to, I can take a better picture and send it to you.

Best regards

Sofia

BioFlex for Industrial piercing or Scaffolding

We received a special request to link 2 BioFlex bars for an industrail or scaffolding piercing, and made special links in BioFlex asking for feedback. This is the feedback we received from Michael from the USA. Thanks Michael !

Hey guys,

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. Per my end of the deal I've included some photos and feedback.

Background:

I got this industrial a year ago and the piercer was high when he did it -literally high-. The bar ended up being to short for the piercing to heal and it started ot form keloids, got painful, and was prone to infection. I replaced the bar with a long 1 3/4 14 ga that provided freedom of movement for the keloids to resolve. I have had the long bar in for about 6 mo. But it wasn't very aesthetic and I wanted something clear -acrylic. After researching I came across bioflex on your site where we came to the deal of some trial bioflex in return for some feedback.

The bioflex we used was 14 ga with a variety of ways to extend it with a variety of push fit ends. I favored the straight extension instead of the push fit ball in b/t the bioflex pieces. Pros-it got great length for the industrial at 37mm. Cons-with the push fit in the center you couldn’t' thread it directly into the piercing. You had to insert one end all the way to the joint and then insert the other end in the distal piercing below. I used to 4mm standard stainless ends for appearance. Bioflex pros-incredibly comfortable, flexible, looks cool, very nice to sleep on -all of the pain of laying on the steel is gone. Cons-the push fit system made it hard to assemble -had to have my wife help- , the push fit extension took some work to get it into the industrial but has stayed very nicely, doesn't have the cool feeling of steel sliding through the skin.

I am currently working with some of the bits of bioflex to weld them together without a push fit lug in the center. I will up date you with any additional successes.

Overall the bioflex is great. It looks cool and is incredibly comfortable. I was initially worried about the push fit ends coming off easy-but it has stayed through sleep, hiking, swimming, running, and tons of activities. Thanks again for the opportunity to trial this great product and for working with me to make it happen,

Michael
